I still have my Allen & Unwin boxed 1974 hardcover edition in a single volume on india paper (fine paper like a bible). It is thinner than any single volume of the Folio editions and includes two large fold-out maps.

  2. joe griggs

These are my favorite in my collection. I too was rather indifferent about this collection, but I love them. These something about them that doesn’t shine through videos, but in hand… they’re stunning.

  3. Occidental Martyr

I’ve been looking for a nice hardcover edition of Lord of the Rings and I think this might be it. Looks like a high quality and good looking edition, despite the green color. I don’t like the childish font on the cover of the Easton ones, it looks more fitting for Harry Potter than LotR.

  4. Carlo V

Totally agree with you James! I own this set and no other edition has taken its place on the shelf, those volumes look so good. I also have the Easton press set, which is supposed to be better as it's leatherbound, and yet, there's something in this Folio edition that is magic! Thank you for the beautiful review!

  5. PinRex47

I have the Harper Collins deluxe editions of the LOTR and the Silmarillion, the Harper Collins Alan Lee illustrated editions, and the Easton Press editions of the LOTR, Silmarillion, Hobbit, Beren & Luthien, etc.
The best for the money is definitely the Alan Lee set, but make sure to wrap Mylar over the covers because the dust jackets are cheap quality. However, my favorite edition to actually read from are hands down the Easton Press editions. There are no pictures in them except the title page cover, but they feel amazing in my hands and they scream of quality – everything from the paper, the leather, and the binding is all proudly made in the USA. As a reader who rereads his books almost every year, the Easton Press version is easily my go-to for reading.

  6. Belemrys

I am torn between buying these or the Harper Collins Deluxe Quarterbound tomes. Which would you recommend? Harper Collins is $240 while these would cost over $380!

  7. Craze Collector

So which versions are the best to read. Folio or the illustrated Harper Collins.

  8. Connor Jones

You should make a video regarding where to start as someone who is starting out their Tolkien collection!

  9. Hercules

I'd be interested in seeing a video focused on the best LOTR paperback editions specifically.

  10. Focus relax

Good book review! Could you post what the cost is for these books in euros/pounds depend what currency you purchased it?

  11. Polyfission

Compared to the recent Harper Collins illustrated set (the ones with the Alan Lee illustrated dust covers), would you say that the folio society is worth the price?

  12. Mnt_Dewdskie

Any chance you could actually review your bookcase? My shelves are sagging with far less books than you have.

  13. Sauron The Wise

The folio society has also made a (sold out obviously) numberd limited edition of the lord of the rings witch can not be compared to anything that we have seen

  14. NZAnimeManga

Ohh wow, these editions are the ones I've been most tempted by — they look gorgeous, but I've heard that they're not the most durable editions when it comes to readability (foil wearing / coming off in hands/ fingerprints on boxes). Would be great to get your thoughts/an update on these after you've read through them to see if you had any of these issues while reading…

Excellent video, keep up the great work!

  15. Mnt_Dewdskie

I just got mine in the mail this week too! Stunning! 😍 You should get Easton Press next! They really will surprise you!

  16. yw1971

3:47 – Still missing the Thangorodrim at the top of the map. CT made a revised map in vol. 11 of 'The History of Middle-earth'.
    Also on 4:11

  17. frank c

Have you seen the new tales of Middle Earth trading cards ive never been a card collector but the art looks really good

  18. Emyrus17

Question. What would you recommend for a good hard back copy of the Trilogy. I have the red pages edition, but with the size it is a bit harder to pack around. I was hoping to find the single versions. Which would you suggest? Ty in advance.

  19. Hörru Du

I thought about it, and realised that they could not publish a deluxe slipcase edition of it due to the fact that is would be to thin for the title to be written horizontlly on the spine in the style of the others. And breaking that aestetic would be way worse than not giving it a deluxe treatment IMHO.

If anything they would have to ad other stuff and rename it.

  20. David Freeman

Hi, James, from California. I enjoy your videos and would definitely like to see A&I given the deluxe treatment. If Easton Press can do a leather-bound version of this thin book, and I have that edition, surely HarperCollins can do a slipcase version.

  21. Reidar Chr. L. Guttormsen

Was that the one piece of writing Harper Collins do not own the full publishing rights to? Seem to remember he gifted the rights to some writings to a former secretary of his. I may remeber it wrong

  22. AnimeFaqts Matt

I believe that letters of j r r tolkien is going to be also released in duluxe, apparently someone contacted harper collins and that was confirmed (although heavy citation needed but i wouldn't be surprised) At this point i wouold say most of tolkiens works have a duluxe form including the three book history of middle earth, so basically the only things left are his smaller form poety and his academic work which I wouldn't be surprised seeing in a collection form

  23. Hazbojangles

They should compile it with some of his other poetry to create a deluxe edition containing all of Tolkien’s academic poetry.

  24. Jeffrey Clayman

I’m also thinking when they run out of deluxe titles they will actually come out with individual deluxe editions of the 12 Vol HoME…and considering EP has done a Leatherbound of this book..I’m sure HC will eventually!

  25. All of Us Pilgrims

Indeed, why not give this particular volume a proper deluxe release? I am not collecting them, to be honest, but it has its own place in the JRRT legacy.
Again, maybe this deals with sales/marketing risks, for I don't have general statistic on sales.

  26. Trotter

There are two new Deluxe editions announced so far for this year, The History of the Hobbit in March and the Battle of Maldon in April, I think if the Lay of Aotrou & Itroun where released today it would have a Deluxe edition, not sure why it did not happen when it came out.

  27. Matt Ots

Definitely a gap that needs to be filled! I would have thought a fair number of people who buy the Tolkien deluxe editions are collectors so there's likely a similar potential market for this as any of the others. I've just started adding the non Middle Earth Tolkien works (although not deluxe editions) to my collection. This one wasn't even on my radar but you've sold it to me already – it's arriving tomorrow!

  28. Matthew Hogg

Needing a Gawain and Green Knight hardback too! Let me complete my collection I beg ha

  29. Lorenzo C.B.

Good news, The Battle of Maldon will have a Deluxe edition. Your shelf is saved.

  30. Tom Sleeckx

I have the exact opinion. This work needs a deluxe edition so bad. Never read the book and don't want to buy any other version as I collect all his "Medieval" works in only deluxe editions.

The brevity of the book can be a reason but I think that indeed a thicker book can printed if they compile works together, sort of like a Tales of Perilious Ream, but then for Medieval stories.

Good news though is that soon a complete new deluxe edition will release; The Battle of Maldon: together with The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth! So really looking out for this one as well.

It keeps up the hope that eventually it wiill come. Just as a Finn & Hengest deluxe edition?

  31. Yesica1993

Wow, I had not even heard of it! I'm guessing it was a financial decision, assuming that most people have not heard of it and/or wouldn't be interested.

  32. Joshua Slusher

Every work of Tolkien deserves a deluxe edition! Hopefully HarperCollins will notice this video and put things right.

  33. The Archivist

Ghandek ideja min fejn nista insib nixtri The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun Deluxe? qieghed out of print u ma nista insibu min imkien. Bdejt naqqad din il kollezzjoni daqxejn tard u dan biss jonqosni. Grazzi.
