If you’ve spent much time on the web, you’ve no doubt heard of Kickstarter. Described as the world’s largest crowdfunding site, it is where people who dream of finishing a film, a piece of art or some other creative project solicit you for cash to complete their vision. People who back Kickstarter projects are offered incentives and special experiences in exchange for their pledge. The concept has worked well as more than five million people have funded more than 50,000 creative projects this way. What if you could use this concept to fund government projects like fixing sidewalks, building a playground in an under-served neighborhood or even building a streeetcar line? Would you give? Neighbor.ly, an 18-month-old Kansas City startup, has already raised more than a million dollars for these types of civic minded projects. Co-founder Sean Connolly sits down with Nick Haines to discuss the rewards and challenges of the concept.
