Crowdfunding – Projects, Stories and Startups

Crowdfunding is the process of convincing typically a large group of people to contribute small sums of money toward a specific project, usually via the Internet. At a time when the media is struggling to fund serious journalism, crowdfunding is helping redefine what’s possible — whether you’re raising money for one story or a new organization. Today, there are hundreds of crowdfunding sites worldwide. Most crowdfunded journalism projects raise modest amounts, but there are some notable big successes. What’s the secret to a successful campaign? What tools do you use? Here are journalists with first-hand experience in the field — from a million-Euro startup in Germany to an investigative center in Brazil and an online publisher in Malaysia.

Moderator: Gabriela Manuli – Global Investigative Journalism Network – Deputy Director
Gabriela Manuli, GIJN Deputy Director. A native of Argentina, Gabriela Manuli has been a journalist for more than ten years, working for radio and TV shows, magazines, and newspapers. From 2005 to 2009 she was a member of the investigative reporting team of Perfil Newspaper in Argentina and covered issues such as migration, human rights, and discrimination in Latin America. She also worked as IJNet’s Spanish Editor and Community Manager. As a freelance reporter she has written for several publications, including La Nación Newspaper (Argentina), El Mundo Newspaper (Spain) and Orsai Magazine. She earned an M.A. in Public Policy with distinctions (Media, Information and Communications Policy Specialization) at the Central European University in Budapest, and graduated with first-class honors in Social Communication Science at the University of Buenos Aires.

Nigel Aw – Malaysiakini – Journalist
Nigel Aw is a journalist with Malaysiakini, Malaysia’s leading independent news site. Earlier this year his work won an award for editorial excellence in investigative reporting from the Hong Kong-based Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA). His winning series was a four-part investigative report titled ‘The rise of the Johor royal family’s business empire,’ which the judges called a “rare and successful attempt to pull open the veil that hides the activities of Malaysia’s royal families.”

Sebastian Esser – Krautreporter – Journalist
Sebastian Esser is the founder and editor of Krautreporter, a digital magazine in Berlin, Germany. He has been reporting on national politics for Vanity Fair Germany and on the media industry for V.i.S.d.P. magazine. He’s been involved in several news startups, including a crowdfunding platform for journalism. Krautreporter was crowdfunded last year by more than 17.000 people. It has been publishing stories on politics, economics and society since last October. It specializes in collaborative journalism: Whenever possible, readers are part of the reporting process.

Natalia Viana – Pública – Co-Director
Natalia Viana is co-director of Agencia Publica. She was a partner of WikiLeaks in Brazil, coordinating the release of the US embassy cables. She has collaborated with various domestic and international media outlets including: Pacifica Network, PBS (US), the BBC, the Guardian, the Independent (UK), Folha de São Paulo, O Globo, and Carta Capital(Brazil). She was an assistant producer for investigative documentaries and is the author of three books about current-day political assassinations and old-time censorship and repression during the military regime. In 2005, she won the Vladimir Herzog Award for Human Rights Reporting and in 2011 and 2013 the Woman Press Award for online reporting and the Allianz Award for Reporting on Environmental issues, coordinating a team of Publica reporters. Her investigation about the impeachment of president Fernando Lugo in Paraguay was shortlisted to the 1st Gabriel Garcia Marques Journalism Award in 2013. Also, Natalia was elected one of the 10 most influential personalities on Brazilian internet by magazine Galileu.

Recorded on September 10th, 2015, in Lillehammer, Norway.
